Empowerment through social networking

So my husband a self-confessed ’social network guru’ gently persuaded me, an indifferent social networker, to start a blog about my life as an occupational therapist, assuring me that it wasn’t about my skills as a story teller more a place to put down my thoughts and to meet and share ideas with others. The cynic in me questions as to whether it is more a ditch attempt to prevent me from offloading my daily woes onto him and to start using a more interested (i hope) listener….The World Wide Web.

For weeks my blog has sat, untouched and rejected as I figure out a way to start the process. How does one go about writing these things? How do I make time for this and aren’t blogs just for people who spend too much time sitting in front of a computer? I’m lucky in my line of work if i get time to nick the ward milk to make myself a cup of tea.

However a recent meeting with a social work friend quickly dispelled those thoughts and having trawled the internet i have found an abundance of social and health related blogs, occupational therapy blogs aimed an investigating the role of blogging to aid professional development, as well as survivor related blogs that provide a unique insight into the lives of stroke suffers among the many.

In addition a recent piece in the guardian written by Michael Cross ‘highlights plans for the NHS Choices website to become a “social network for health” where patients can comment directly on the care they receive – which, it is claimed, “will empower people to make informed decisions about their health and social care” ‘

Ok so I guess social networking isn’t just for the computer geek………

    Hi
no social networking isn’t just for the computer geeks at all – in fact there’s quite a few of us everyday OT’s trying out and exploring social networking tools! Hope you keep up blogging – there are a few academics using social networks, quite a few students and just a handful of OT’s – so go for it…you’ll be amazed where it might take you!
Check out my blog and particularly the entry about the presentation that a group of us put together for the recent British OT conference in Harrogate
